Prostate Cancer – but I am young!!

Fate has decided that I should be a prostate cancer educator to my circle of people I know. And this month is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. How lucky is that. So go to your GP (or get your male loved ones to) and get checked.http://www.prostate.org.au/…/prostate-cancer-awareness-mon…/

Why me you ask – well here I am 44 and found out that I have prostate cancer a few weeks ago – no real new symptoms, mainly that my PSA blood test was up from what is normally. I had been getting a PSA blood test (yes fellas a blood test – no digits in places where they don’t belong – well not to start with) when I got a cholesterol checks, thanks to the recommendation of my loving wife who happens to have started her career as a Medical Scientist .

My PSA was raised and nothing was answering why. So a MRI on the boys 8th Birthday, a Biopsy a few weeks later has confirmed that I have fairly aggressive cancer cells (Gleason Score 9) in my prostate and most likely it is going to get removed. I had a scan yesterday to see if the cancer has spread and will find out the results next week. If no spread, then hey presto get that sucker out and things should be far more positive (yeah there is some possible side effects but hey – I like living more than some side effects).

The main message is that I got it early which is great and can it treated early, hopefully before it has spread anywhere else!!

I AM 44 NOT 84 – this cancer might be more prevalent in older men but it can hit us at the prime of our lives. Not looking for it, does not make it go away.

So go see your GP/MD, it is painless.

Well writing that was a lot easier than I thought it would be and hopefully the men out there will see their GP.
